What is the “STAP” method?

The STAP method is a simple, four-step approach to overcoming negative thought patterns and making better decisions. By consciously acknowledging negative thoughts, gaining a fresh perspective, setting ambitious yet achievable goals, and practicing new thought patterns, you can rewire your brain for success and personal growth.

  • When you notice yourself in a negative thought pattern, be consciously aware you are in that thought and actively shut the alarm off. Acknowledge it so you can move past it. You can’t move past a pattern until you know you are in one.

  • Think of it as advising a friend. By distancing yourself emotionally, you can make better decisions and stack up good choices by observing rather than judging the circumstances.

  • By aiming small at your goal, whether it’s making a field goal or making a sale, being intentional, and directing your focus at something specific will help you attain your goal. This balanced strategy paves the way for both personal and professional growth.

  • Rather than staying stuck in past mental patterns, which you have learned to shut off, focus on developing new thought patterns. With persistence, these new habits will help you press play on the new thoughts that you are aiming small with, and you'll witness a remarkable transformation in your life.
